National
Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) is a statutory
government organization under the National Science and Technology
Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Science and Technology. Its
main responsibilities are to undertake, support, and promote the development
of electronic, computing, telecommunication, and information technologies
through research and development activities. NECTEC also disseminates
and transfers such technologies for contribution to the economic growth
and social development in the country, following the National Economic
and Social Development Plan.
NECTEC was established on September 16, 1986, initially as a project
under Ministry of Science, Technology and Energy (the former name
of the Ministry of Science and Technology). In December 1991, NECTEC
was transformed into a specialized national center under the National
Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), a new agency
following the enactment of the Science and Technology Development
Act of 1991.
The Science and Technology Development Act (1991) brought about
the unification of four agencies: Science and Technology Development
Board (STDB), National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
(BIOTEC), National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC),
and National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC)
into the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).
NSTDA's science and technology development policies are directed
by the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) chaired by the
Minister of Science and Technology. The NSTB is appointed by the
Cabinet and composed of equal numbers of highly-qualified
representatives from both government and private sectors.
The NSTB has appointed
the NECTEC Executive Board to be responsible for supervising NECTEC
to be in line with the NSTB's policy. Currently, the NECTEC Executive
Board is composed of highly-qualified representatives from both
government and private sectors
with the President of NSTDA as the Chairman and the Director of
NECTEC as a committee member and the Secretariat.
